What is Postive Behaviour Support (PBS)
It is an evidence-based, person-centred approach to supporting children in situations where there’s a risk of challenging behaviour. The primary goal is to increase your child’s quality of life and a secondary goal of decreasing the frequency and severity of their challenging behaviours.
As parents, it’s natural to see behaviours of concern in your child from time to time.
Sometimes we can easily put it down to stress, anxiety or a moment of frustration. But if these behaviours become more frequent, and possibly more severe, it can become difficult for you and your family to manage.
It can be easy to ask ‘what am I doing wrong?’ when your child shows challenging behaviours without any reason or warning. It’s important to remember the reason for the challenging behaviour isn’t always clear at first.
Our highly-trained therapists are here to assist you along the journey and offer practical support and strategies for change.
PBS is about working with your child, family and important others in their lives to develop a shared understanding of why the child has a need to engage in challenging behaviour. We encourage a holistic, person and family centred approach that looks at all the aspects beyond the behaviour.
Our therapists can:
- Help your child understand their daily life using clearer ways of communicating with them, such as introducing a picture schedule
- Change the environment around your child in order to best support their needs, such as reducing high noise levels
- Improve your child’s lifestyle to include more interesting and enjoyable activities.
- Change the environment so the child is involved in meaningful and positive relationships with others.
We work with you, planning intervention that focuses on truly understanding and addressing your child’s needs, their environment and overall quality of life.
This process works with your child, family and important others to develop and share understanding about why your child has a need to engage in a challenging behaviour.
Children who sometimes engage in these behaviours are actually telling us something is wrong or missing. Working with you, we look into all areas of your child’s life including their environment, family, life stage, health, and communication.
