Meet Polly, a small blonde Labrador with a big bright career ahead of her. Polly joined the Kites crew in early March and is working with our Therapy Dog Instructor, Victoria, to learn the ropes of her important role with the children of Perth.
Our Dog Assisted Therapy Program
Dog Assisted Therapy is one of the many therapy services offered by Kites Children’s Therapy in Victoria Park.
This service is all about creative ways to assist children to reach their goals. Our occupational therapists work with you and your child to outline key goals for your child to work towards, with the help and motivational support of a therapy dog.
Our program is available to children with a range of disabilities or developmental challenges.
Polly’s training is in full swing
Our therapy dogs are trained in collaboration with Guide Dogs WA (link opens in new window). Every pup has their own personality that shines through during the early training stages. This can help indicate what future role each dog might be best suited to.
“Polly is calm when being groomed and will naturally settle and lay down. This is great for therapy sessions as being groomed by children can be a motivating or calming activity.” – Victoria
Polly is naturally calm and a lower-energy dog. As an excited pup, she’s learning to be calmer when greeting new friends, both people and dogs.
“I enjoy watching her confidence grow and this is when her slightly cheeky side comes out! She is just starting to learn the ropes.” – Victoria.
Since initiating the program in 2020 with Bazza, our black Lab therapy dog, the service has grown in popularity – so much that we launched the program in our Tasmanian branch as the first of its kind in the state.
“Dog Assisted Therapy is a novel program, all about helping kids reach their therapy goals. We’re excited to have the next cohort of dogs for 2022 in training.” – Kate, Program Manager.
The introduction of Polly has been a necessary move for Kites Children’s Therapy, as interest in the service has surpassed Bazza’s day-to-day workload. With more dogs in the program, we can help more children across Perth work towards reaching their therapy goals – which is the heart of what we do.
You may be able to access this service through your NDIS funding.
